Colossus-quiz

Postitus Postitas arko »

Nüüd, kui Tauno mäng on läbi, on meil võimalus kaasa lüüa veel suuremas ja uhkemas netimängus. Üks Inglise tähtmängijaid Olav Bjortomt (Tallinna EMi 6. koht) on kokku pannud 501-küsimuselise tasuta mängu, spetsiaalselt rahvusvahelisele auditooriumile.
Allpool on lõigud tema kirjast mulle:

It is 501-questions to be done in three-and-a-half hours (non-English speakers get an extra half hour and are allowed a dictionary to translate words and phrases), without help from the internet, reference books or people who happen to be in the same room. I have called it The Colossus.

Also, unlike my first one, The Monster, the questions have absolutely no British bias and utilise world knowledge. Therefore, it is a level playing field for everyone, no matter their nationality. I am allowing a month for people to return their entries via email/mail (the deadline is September 26 and I am sending it out next week).

I have over a hundred people on board all of varying nationalities already including Kevin Ashman, Pat Gibson, Erik Derycke, Jeopardy winner Ken Jennings (I tested it on both Ken and Pat who really liked it) but would like a few more Estonians and would very much appreciate your help in telling them about it.

It would also give your Estonian quizzers a chance to compete against the aforementioned top names before the European Championships in December (and I would like to assure you the questions, though of a British style, i.e. short and snappy, are challenging and of a high standard.

You can register your interest by emailing thecolossusquiz@gmail.com

http://www.iqagb.co.uk/trivia/viewtopic.php?t=5819

2007 sees the launch of what we hope will become an annual 'postal' quiz
based on the Hollywood Academy Awards. Like a quizzing.co.uk Grand Prix, the
contest will feature 180 questions (plus tie-breakers) spread over a number of
genres. But in this quiz, genres are inspired by various Academy Award
categories and questions will be linked to relevant Oscar winners and nominees. Many
questions will also feature a portmanteau aspect so that quizzers who are
not necessarily film fanatics will also be able to attempt an answer. Then, as
with the Academy Awards, we will present our own 'Oscars' for each category.
There should be some 'gongs' too!

The intention is to make the quiz available from early February for a period
of 10 days, with entries to be submitted by post or e-mail in time to be
marked so that we can announce our winners on the same night the Academy
distributes its statuettes. We will also be making the answers available to entrants
around the same time.

Olav Bjortomt has previously shown that such quizzes can operate
successfully, quizzers being put 'on trust' not to google etc. (after all, what's the
point of cheating?). His quizzes (e.g. the Colossus, advertised on this site)
was supported by over 100 people, many of them based overseas. We hope to
capture a similar wide interest for this speciality quiz.

If this 'Academy Award' quiz is a success we will look to run other
speciality events throughout the year (suggestions welcomed!). We hope also the
experience may serve as a gentle ease-in for people who have thus far been shy at
coming forward to take part in live Grands Prix. Who knows?

Interested parties can expect finalised details to appear before the end of
the month. Entry fees paid by PayPal or cheque will be £5.50, with a discount
available for cash - registration will be possible in person at our
Northampton Grand Prix on 27 January, entry fee £5.00 (50p discount).

The Genres/Categories for this quiz will be ...

Best Auteur (film makers, directors and producers)

Best Screenplay (original & adapted – including books & plays inspiring
screenplays)

Best Film (all languages, nationalities and industries)

Best Performance (The stars, actors and actresses)

Best Supporting Performance (supporting roles, character acting, ensemble
pieces etc.)

Best Technical (SFX, set design, technical effects etc.)

Best Artistic (Music, Art direction, costume)

The ‘big 5’ (listed above in bold) will comprise 30 questions each, other
two 15 questions each. In addition there will be a ‘general’ category (20
questions) to be used to settle ties. This makes, in all, 200 questions.
