This modest sized city is nearer Switzerland than Germany. Another claim to fame, it was the home of a shoe making industry (the city houses 'The International Museum of Footwear'). Nowdays it is perhaps best known for its university and fine old citadel, part of which has been converted into a zoo!

Who is this architect and engineer?

He gained international recognition for his dramatic designs for large-span structures made possible with the use of reinforced concrete. He developed ideas for a reinforced concrete which allowed him to create structures of "strength, simplicity and grace". His important works include a prefabricated 309-foot-span arch for the Turin Exhibition Building consisting of a single undulating large-span roof, the UNESCO building in Paris, the cathedral at New Norcia, near Perth, Australia.

It appears, that Marcel Breuer was one of three architects of the UNESCO building, but with help I presume the name you're looking for is Piero Nervi.
